Text messaging and spoken language can be very creative in many ways. There are specific features that can be used to add creativity in a conversation and I am going to talk about them in my essay. Both text messaging and spoken language have their own features that are unique to them and they can be very creative forms of communicating. However, there are some features that both types of communication can use, even if it’s modified to suit the type of communication. All types of language are always creating new ways to speak to each other and the variety of ways to speak will always get larger and larger.

 

Spoken language has a very unique way of communicating in the form of paralinguistic and linguistic features. Paralinguistic features are non-verbal communications that are used while having a spoken conversation with someone. Linguistic features are the different sounds or changes your voice makes while speaking. They can create ways to speak without just using words or phrases.

Body language is a type of paralinguistic feature that expresses your feeling through the actions you make with your body. For example, if you turn away from someone that could imply that you do not wish to speak to that person anymore. It is a way of communicating non-verbally, to avoid telling someone how you feel with words, and just showing them your feelings with a simple action. This is a form of creativity that is used when speaking to someone and it is a solution for talking without using words.

Facial Expression is another paralinguistic feature that can create new ways to communicate. For example, raising your eyebrows or widening your eyes suggests that you are shocked and surprised.  It shows how you feel without using words, therefore, it is a creative way of communicating and it is unique to spoken language.

Volume change in your voice is a creative way to express your feelings. However, it depends on how you use it. To raise your voice could imply that you are angry but it links in to your paralinguistic features to be able to tell the seriousness in what you’re saying.

All of these are examples of new forms of creativity to communicate and speak while having a spoken conversation.

 

Text messaging is a very modern way of communicating with people. Text messaging is also very clever because there are always new words or ways to text that are constantly being created. Text messaging is widely regarded as a way of communicating that is very popular with the modern era today. One of the unique features in text messaging is the way that people abbreviate words or make phrases into acronyms. These are very creative forms of speaking because it is very different to standard writing and people who aren’t familiar with text messaging, will find it hard to understand.

“Ite” is an example of an abbreviation that people use when they text. It is abbreviated from alright and it mostly stems from the dialect of youth in London. This means that the some youth from London sound like they are saying “ite” when they say alright and this has been transferred onto text messaging. This shows that new words and abbreviations are being created based on a type of peoples’ dialect.
